Tips for successful implementation of new technology

How to effectively introduce new technology into your practice.

To ensure you get the most out of your investment, researching and creating a plan is essential when introducing new technology into your practice.Stuck on deciding if you should introduce a particular technology, and how to do it? Think about these 9 key considerations:

Key Consideration #1: Time

Have you asked:

  • How long will it take me to implement the technology?
  • How long will it take to include this in my consults?
  • Is it sustainable to incorporate this into standard consults?

An important consideration is how much time you can save after the initial setup time you put aside.

Once you have decided on the tests and metrics, it’s easy to complete an assessment in a few minutes. With the right technology, this should save you time and money.

If you have a client with a knee replacement, you could run tests at three months, six months and nine months. The tests over time would typically progress from weight-bearing symmetry to isometric tests, to squat assessments. With the right technology, the software will learn to automatically detect and analyse these common tests. Over time this would mean completing an assessment would take only ten minutes.

Key Consideration #2: Fit

Knowing your intention for using the product is essential.

  • Does the product have the features required to achieve this?
  • Are there other products available that will achieve the same outcome?
  • What are the pros and cons of each?

Key Consideration #3: Space

Ask yourself:

  • Where will you install the equipment?
  • Will you have a dedicated assessment room or do you need portable equipment?
  • Does your technology provider enable you with a variety of implementation options?

VALD Health technology has a variety of options for portability and installation. Our staff are happy to provide examples of how other successful clinics are implementing our tech.

Key Consideration #4: Affordability

Can you afford it and how long will it take to deliver a return on investment

Your technology provider should offer a range of flexible pricing options. VALD Health enables customers with weekly, monthly, quarterly or annual payment options.

The cost of one system could be offset by as little as two consults per week.

Key Consideration #5: Buy-in

How do you get the rest of your clinic onboard?

It’s important to map out a plan for adoption and staff training:

  • Elect an internal staff champion.
  • Discuss in monthly best practice meetings.
  • Include in CPD.
  • Regularly reward staff who are using the technology.

Key Consideration #6: Partner

Choose a provider that aligns with your business.

  • Does the provider offer support?
  • Do they supply educational opportunities?
  • Do they make regular updates?

Communication is key. Reach out regularly to your provider and develop a rapport to ensure you get the most from your investment.

VALD Health offers global support with experts in multiple time zones who can troubleshoot and show you how to best use your new technology. In addition, free educational resources are available to help you with more than just a manual.

Key Consideration #7: Reliability

  • How accurate is the technology for delivering reliable and repeatable results?
  • Is there supporting research available?
  • Are there standard protocols for the assessment?

Leading researchers and clinicians develop VALD Health systems. Standard video protocols are available to ensure you can quickly assess your clients over and over to gather accurate data.

Key Consideration #8: Outcomes

  • How will this help my client?
  • What pathologies will the technology help you assess and treat?
  • Is it useful for the majority of your clients, or will it help you attract a broader client base?
  • Will your clients be interested in using the technology?

VALD Health systems are designed with data visualisation and reporting in mind to help you engage your clients in their rehab or training progress.

Key Consideration #9: Workflow

With any technology that offers so many metrics and tests, it’s intimidating to know where to start.

  • First, think about what tests you would typically do in an assessment.
  • Next, look at the dashboard metrics which will help you make a decision.
  • Finally, share the report with your client or their other health practitioners.
